English Grammar : The adverb

Words in English are divided into pronouns, nouns and verbs, but there is also called (adverb) and here is the focus of our lesson.

We will now learn all about the adverb, when we use it, how to turn the adjective to the adverb. This and more we will learn about it through detailed explanation with many illustrative examples.

The adverb

When to use the adverb in English?

  • Very simply, we use the adverb to describe the verb and it comes before or after the word it describes.
  • Usually it comes as answer to question using one of the following words (How-where-when).

How to formulate the adverb?

1- We can convert any adjective in English to adverb, when we add (ly) at the end of the adjective for examples:

💠 Quick→ quickly

💠 nice → nicely

2- There are adjectives that can’t  be added(ly), it retains its form when it convert to adverb such as:

💠 Fast→ fast                                                         

3- There are also adjectives, when they turn into adverb completely changing form for examples:

💠 Sandy sings well.    (adverb)

💠 Sandy is a good singer.     (adjective)

How to add (ly) to the adjective?

1- When we add (ly) to the adjective finished with(le) , we delete (e) and add (y) such as:

💠 Possible →possibly 

2- When we add (ly) to the adjective finished with(y) , we convert (y) into (I) and add (y) such as:

💠 Happy → happily

⚠ Note:

But a lots confuses the use of the adverb with the adjective, what’s the difference between them?

Very simply, the adverb is award that describe the verb, but adjective is a word that describe the noun for examples:

💠 Sara is driving carefully.      (adverb)

💠 Sara is careful, when she drives.     (adjective )

Find out about the types of the adverb

1- (adverb of degree)

It used to show the strength or weakness of the thing such as (very- too-so)

2- (adverb of frequency )

This is used to demonstrate the extent of repetition such as (usually –hardly-sometimes- often- always- never)

💠 My young sister often sings in bathroom.

3- ( adverb of sequences )

This adverb is used for submission and delay statement, and it is usually in the first or the last sentence for examples: (finally- first- then).

💠 First, you study French.

4- (adverb of manner)

There is also adverb’s function is describing how the act or event happened such as: 

💠 Amira spoke softly to her husband.

💠 When the doctor speak, my friends listen carefully.

5- (adverb of time)

And that limits the time such as (tomorrow –yesterday- now), it usually comes at the end of the sentence, but if we need to emphasize the meaning, we will put it at the beginning of the sentence.

6- And here’s  the last type of adverbs that show the strength or weakness of the adjective (Intensifier)

💠 for examples: (very- really- quite- extremely –incredibly-fairly)
