English Grammar : Question words

Today we will learn about the most important item of interrogative sentence in English, we will recognize the question words are the key of formulating the question.

We will study all questioning words and learn about each word separately in term of function and usage method with many examples.

Question words

Before identifying question words, we should indicate that, there are two types of interrogative sentence in English. 

1- The first type its answer with (yes-no), and in this question we don’t  need any question word, but we providing the auxiliary verb to the subject, if the sentence contain the auxiliary verb .

But the sentence doesn’t contain the auxiliary verb, we will use (do-does) as a question word in the sentence in case the sentence in present tense for examples:

  • Does Ahmed study a French lesson?             No, he doesn’t 
  • Do your friends travel by train?                    Yes, they do

In case the sentence in the past tense, we use (did) as a question word such as: 

  • Did you go to the cosmetic doctor yesterday?                       Yes, I did
  • Did you enter the cinema last week with your fiancé?          No, I didn’t 

2- The second type of interrogative sentence, its answer is open and here we use a question word from which we will now know.

The most important question words in English

1- Who

This word used with people to ask about the subject such as:

  • Who does feed the cat?
  • Who did direct this wonderful film?
  • Who did build this building?

2- Whom

It used to ask about the object:

  • Whom are you going to invite to your wedding party?

3- What

This word used to ask about something or enquire about something:

  • What did you decide about this project?
  • What is lead you to do this?

4- Whose

This word used to ask about ownership of something or, to know the owner of anything:

  • Whose motorbike is parked outside?

5- Which

Usually it used to choose between two or more things:

  • Which one prefers Sushi or shrimp?
  • Which one prefer to wear to the party?

6- Where

This word used to ask about places such as:

  • Where does your grandfather live?
  • Where do penguins live?

7- When

It used to ask about the time, its answer usually contain one of these words (at night-in morning –today-…) such as:

  • When will the second semester begin?
  • When will we go to visit our uncle Jan?

8- Why

It used to ask about the reason or, why something happened:

  • Why do bees stand on flowers?
  • Why does this student always come late at school?

9- How

It used to ask about the situation for examples:

  • How did you learn German so quickly?
  • How did Samira win this tournament?

Now that we know all the question words and how to use and function each of them, we can conclude our lesson today.
